princess on a broken down throne

Name:
Sumi

True Name:
Naotaka Emiko
(Emiko Naotaka if going by American name organization)

Gender:
Female

Age:
23

Birthday:
January 16, 1998

Greatest Ambition:
To get all of the things that her father promised her. Someone to take care of her and everything that her little heart desires.

Physical Description:
Being of Asian descent, Sumi is rather delicate looking with many of the typical Japanese traits. She isn't overly tall, standing at a decent 5'6". Her build is very thin and willowy, but she has just enough curve to her figure to be flattering. Her eyes are dark brown and are set in a dainty, rounded face framed by dark brown hair that is nearly black. Her hair is long, reaching to her mid-back when she doesn't see fit to trim it. Her clothing still reflects her style before the virus hit, although she doesn't have nearly as much variety to choose from in her clothing. Somehow or other she always manages to keep herself looking pristine. As much as possible anyway.

Distinguishing Marks:
Tattoo of her family's symbol on the small of her back

Sexual Orientation:
Heterosexual

Single or taken:
Single

Best friend:
None

Personality:
Sumi is every bit what you would expect of the "delicate little flower" from a rich and high society family. She is pristine and proper in her behavior and mannerisms. This is a result of training in etiquette that began when she was only a little girl of three years old. She knows how to be polite to all kinds of people and how to always conduct herself like a lady no matter the circumstances. As a result of her teachings, Sumi does tend to come off as weak to most. And to a certain point, that's true. She was never taught how to defend herself hand to hand, so if someone ever did threaten her that way she'd have to rely on the strength and protection of others. However, if you put a weapon in her hands (like a gun or a knife), then she is far more adept at protecting herself and wouldn't seem weak in the slightest. Sumi is confident in her abilities, but she acknowledges the fact that if she doesn't have a weapon to use, she will be far more delicate and far more helpless in a bad situation.

Below that soft exterior, you'll find a girl who has a tolerance for things that most girls really wouldn't. With members of the yakuza as your only friends and family, you learn to be able to handle a vast array of good and bad things that you see. Sumi has had to watch people die at the hands of her father and she's witnessed unspeakable acts of violence against lesser families who didn't know their place. She's seen women be abused by those she called her "brothers" and she's seen others be tortured for information. By now, she is fully tolerant of such acts of violence as they have become commonplace. It never bothered her to see what had happened in New Haven and Jax's leadership of the Jackals doesn't bother her in the slightest.

You see, in such actions she sees power. Her family was one of the most powerful yakuza families in the country. Those who defied them or got in their way were eliminated and only added more to that power. It's the same with the Jackals now. The Mountain Lions were in the way. They were taken out. Now the Jackals hold more of the cards.

Sumi likes to think that she can see the good in all people, no matter how bad or good they act in life. She sees the good in cold-blooded killers or ruthless leaders. If her family could have killed and hurt so many, but still have treated her and the younger ones like they were the most precious things on this earth, then they couldn't be all bad. That's why she feels so at ease with those that are not necessarily good. She likes to believe that she knows what makes them tick, so she knows how to handle them. And for the most part, that's true. She hasn't experienced anyone yet that doesn't fit that status quo.

Personal History:
Irashai masen, Ohime-sama... Welcome to the world, Princess.

Those were the first words Naotaka Emiko heard when she was born. Her mother, Haruka, held her little girl as if she was the most dear thing that had ever graced the world. Her father and her husband would be so proud. It wasn't the son that would be able to take Eiji's place as the head of the family, but a daughter could be raised to marry a powerful man from another family and create alliances and valuable ties. It was at that very moment that Emiko's future was being laid out for her, even though she couldn't understand at all what it meant. From that moment on, she really would be the little princess. Showered in anything that she could ever want and wanting for absolutely nothing. All she had to do was ask and her father or her mother would get something for her. Simple as that.

When she turned four years old, Emiko began her lessons on being a lady. She didn't go to school like other kids her age. No, she and all of the other little girls in the family (whether they were half-sisters or cousins), would be home tutored and would spend a majority of the day learning the things they would have to learn in order to grow up and be the perfect wives. Proper etiquette, manners, how to dress, how to walk, how to talk. All the while, Emiko's mother would oversee the lessons and give her daughter encouragement whenever she excelled at a certain aspect of her learning. At times her father would also offer some kinds words, but she didn't always see her father. He was always busy, doing something or other that Emiko wasn't necessarily allowed to know about.

And that's how she grew up. Day by day, week by week, month by month and year by year, Emiko made progress and became more and more of that perfect young lady. The delicate blossom whose purpose it would be to make connections between her own family and another family of power. She was beautiful, smart, well-groomed. In essence, she was perfect. She outshined all the other girls, much to her parents' delight. They couldn't happier that such a bright girl would have the family's future riding on her shoulders. Even at the tender age of fifteen, Emiko had offers for marriage flooding in by the day. She was perfection, so it was only natural that it worked that way.

From age sixteen and on, Emiko's focus was less on the academic aspects of her learning and more on interfacing with her family and with those that were interested in marrying her. And that was the time when she learned the full extent of what her family really did. In those years she saw behind the kind faces and respect she was offered by those lower in rank than her father and her mother. She saw the ruthlessness and violence that it took to keep her family unthreatened and on top. And, oddly enough, Emiko didn't find it to be distressing or disturbing. She saw...power. She saw strength.

Only a "princess" of a yakuza family would have such tolerance.

It seemed like things would be perfect for so long. Emiko would marry who ever her father set her to marry and more bonds would be made to strengthen the family. But perfection isn't always meant to last. When Emiko was eighteen years old (in the year 2016), a mass assasination was planned against the leaders of the Naotaka family. All she remembers hearing are gunshots, screaming and panic. Her bodyguards immediately ushered her and the other girls out of the compound amidst the running and screaming individuals. Emiko heard yells, saying that her grandparents and her mother were dead. But she didn't let herself crumble. No, she would get out and survive.

That she did. She learned that her father was still alive and safe and, soon after, received the news that she and the rest of the girls would be sent elsewhere so as not to endanger them. He chose one of the places that the Naotaka family's enemies wouldn't look. America. More specifically, Wyoming. So Emiko boarded the flight and went to America with her half-sisters and her cousins. The death of her mother and her grandparents did reach her, but she tried her best not to let it show unless she was alone. A lady was always composed, after all.

It was 2017 and on when tragedy decided to follow to the Americas. Apparently a pathogen called the Ans virus was beginning to strike people ill and kill all of those who were 25 and over. Those who had brought the girls over from Japan were quick to keep them all inside and to try and keep them away from exposure to the virus. But one by one bodyguards and the like were beginning to get sick.

Soon enough, they were all dead and Emiko and the girls were left virtually alone. While most of them fell to panic, Emiko took control and became their leader of sorts. Their location was far from other people, so it was only a matter of time before everything was looted and things would get back. So, taking as many provisions as they could, the women made their way to the nearest city. New Haven, Wyoming.

Inevitably, some of her cousins and half-sisters died from malnutrition or from violence from others in the city. Emiko mourned their loss silently, trying to make sure that the other girls were alright as well as she could. Eventually the city came under the control of a unit of U.S. soldiers all under one leader. A man named Jax. New Haven was being ruled in a military dictatorship until 2020, when an uprising took down Jax's army and started to destroy the city.

All of the other girl's died during the beginning of the chaos, but Emiko managed to make it through in the confusion and craziness. She was without a weapon, so she had no idea how to defend herself. She ended up getting hurt a lot and she was sure that it would be her end. But she was saved by Jax and those that were still loyal to him. Emiko had no idea why they decided to save her, but, eternally grateful, she fled with them to the forests of Wyoming.

Her name was changed to Sumi, the nickname of one of her cousins that she'd been particularly close to. With a new identity, she began to rebuild herself in that time they were hiding out in the woods. Then, eventually, their group, the Jackals, invaded Sundance and took over the territory of a tribe there called the Mountain Lions. Watching Jax's men kill those who did not pledge their loyalty to Jax was almost like how things had been at home. She saw strength and power in her leader. And, admittedly, it was appealing. It made her feel at home.

Now, Sumi is among her new group. A princess among jackals.
